President John Dramani Mahama says criticism from Ghanaians on social media, especially on TikTok, is helping his government to perform better.
Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Moscow, Russia, President Mahama said he does not get angry when citizens criticize him or say he is taking the country in the wrong direction. According to him, such feedback rather helps him to assess his government and improve leadership.
The President revealed that he monitors social media and the traditional media regularly for public complaints, and sometimes calls his ministers directly to demand answers.
"Sometimes I go on the media, and I see something, and I call the minister, and I say, 'Hey, my friend, what is happening in your sector?'" he recounted.
He assured Ghanaians that their posts and videos do not go unnoticed.
"So all your TikToks and things, don't think I don't see them. I see them," President Mahama said.
Giving an example of how online complaints lead to action, the President cited a recent video about a bridge in the Ashanti Region that was reportedly washed away after illegal mining activities. He said after seeing the complaint, he forwarded it to the relevant regional minister who visited the site and found that a water channel had been blocked. An excavator was immediately deployed to clear the blockage and restore water flow.
"That is how you solve some of these things," he noted.
President Mahama described social media as a powerful tool for governance and urged citizens to continue speaking out on issues affecting the country, regardless of which political party is in power.
He called on Ghanaians to put accountability above partisan politics.
