The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the cancellation of the two-day mid-term break for all basic schools across the country.
The break, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6, 2026, will no longer come off.
According to a statement issued from GES Headquarters and signed by Daniel Fenyi, the decision forms part of measures to recover instructional contact hours lost during the recent industrial action embarked upon by teacher unions.
All Basic Schools To Open
The statement directed that all basic schools - comprising Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) - are expected to open and conduct full and normal academic activities on both days.
"Therefore, all basic schools are expected to open and conduct normal academic activities on Thursday, November 5, and Friday, November 6, 2026," the statement said.
GES further advised teachers, students, parents, guardians and the general public to take note and be guided accordingly.
Why This Decision?
The cancellation comes barely weeks after teachers across the country laid down their tools over conditions of service and other unresolved grievances, leading to the loss of several instructional days.
The 2026 academic calendar had already factored in a mid-term break to allow pupils and teachers to rest and rejuvenate after weeks of continuous teaching and learning.
However, with the recent strike disrupting the calendar, GES says it is imperative to compensate for the lost time to ensure completion of the syllabus before the end of term examinations.
Educational stakeholders have on several occasions expressed concern about the frequent disruptions to the academic calendar and its impact on learning outcomes, especially at the basic level where foundational literacy and numeracy are built.
What Parents and Teachers Should Know
- No pupil should stay at home on November 5 & 6 - All public basic schools will be in session.
- Teaching and learning will be monitored by district education directorates.
The Service thanked all stakeholders for their cooperation and reiterated its commitment to ensuring quality education delivery across the country.
