The deadly incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along an unauthorised route in the border town, close to Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso.
How the Explosion Happened
According to security sources in Hamile, the tricycle, popularly known as "Aboboyaa", was transporting suspected explosive materials suspected to be dynamite when security officers attempted to intercept it.
The sources say the riders were using an unapproved route to evade security checks and allegedly refused to stop when ordered by officers at a checkpoint. This led to a chase by the Immigration officers on duty.
During the pursuit, the tricycle exploded, killing the civilians on board instantly and catching the pursuing officers in the blast.
One Immigration officer died on the spot, while another sustained life-threatening injuries. The injured officer is currently in critical condition, though the hospital where he is receiving treatment has not been disclosed for security reasons.
Security Concerns at Hamile Border
Hamile is one of Ghana's major border communities with Burkina Faso and remains a hotspot for cross-border surveillance due to its closeness to the Sahel region. Security agencies in the area have intensified patrols in recent months to curb smuggling and the movement of unauthorized goods.
This latest incident has heightened concerns about the smuggling of explosive materials through unapproved routes and the dangers security personnel face in the line of duty.
It is unclear where the suspected dynamite was being transported to or where it originated from. The Ghana Immigration Service is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Security has since been beefed up in the area as investigations begin into the source and intended destination of the explosives.
